If Google Is Serious About Reforming Patent Mess, It Should Make A Bold Statement And Stop Using Motorola Patents To Demand Cash

We talked in the past that Google never used patents offensively. That is, although it has numerous patents, has never (that anyone can point a) used to threaten another company to make them pay. In contrast, only used defensively. During the summer, Google has become even more aggressive about how patents had become a tax on innovation, rather than allowing innovation. In fact, he noted that Google actually looked like a perfect example of how innovative companies are not to be aggressive patent - a sentiment that is very strong in the valley.

course, a week later, Google bought Motorola, almost entirely by its extensive patent portfolio. Given the clear view Google patent, the assumption was that the company will continue to use the patents on the defensive against the growing number of attacks by patentees in Google. However, as is MG Siegler reports, it seems that Google could at least follow the strategy of acquiring Motorola later patent (which is about to be approved):

Google says do not think any changes to the form of Motorola has been the application of the patent. This is supposed to mean, among other things, will now continue and try to block Apple's iPhone is sold in some countries.

It also means they will probably be suing Microsoft and trying to lose the H.264 video codec - which, incidentally, Google has created a competitor (WebM) for fear that someone is came one day and try to enforce patents that kill the H.264 video codec.

How about a mind fuck?

tables were so excited that Apple and Microsoft now complains of the patent application. Specifically, the two want assurance that patents licensed on fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory, reasonable and nondiscriminatory (), are actually just that -. Just

eyes, "just" Apple is paying 2.25 percent on all iPhone and iPad John Paczkowski at AllThingsD sold did the math:. This would mean paying Apple about a billion dollars a year in royalties to Motorola.

billion. The mobile unit is to buy Google lost $ 285 million for the year last year. Apple may be indirectly a competitor to keep afloat.
