Google Staredown With FTC May Result In FTC Blinking

Back in October, we wrote about a report that the FTC is preparing to file an antitrust complaint against Google. Trying to learn more, the story kept changing. Firstly, they said that it was a matter of "manipulation search" in making Google related information on the top of search results (ie, find a location and a Google map appears top page.) Then he talked about how he will focus on how Google recently acquired Motorola Mobility abusing patents essential standards. If it is the latter, it seemed a strange way to do it, because it was so related to the principal activity of Google. Similarly, all "search manipulation" claim seemed strange. What kind of "damage" is when someone searches on Google address is

shows a Google Map . They seem to really benefit consumers.

addition, for all the talk of others injured Google, I do not. I am constantly amazed at the
rarely
seems that the results on Google topped the list of research on the important things. Whenever I raise this question, we see that people say that Google should be taken down to favor its own services when people do searches, but so little to do. For example, I just do a Google search on "your" and this is what I see:

An ad for IE and Firefox, then ... Wikipedia then. Chrome does not record up to four.

How about a trip by plane, because it is a key (Expedia is one of the companies that drive the lawsuit against Google):

things that Google seems to be everywhere. Expedia Instead you up there. Second, you Kayak ... the company that powers Microsoft seeks journey. So ... I am at a loss.

Also, apparently some guy FTC. Despite all the bluster, there are growing signs that the FTC may flash as it is to realize that it might actually not have enough evidence to make the case.
Talking to a number of people in DC about it, I keep hearing the same story over and over again. All are variations on the following: FTC head Jon Leibowitz is to leave the job (and into the private sector, of course), but I would like a "turning point." Somewhere in the last year or two, decided he was going after Google for antitrust violations would be a strong point. As such, he brought a number of people to help do so, including Tim Wu, who had written an entire book means that large companies are bad. While I respect Tim and I agree with him on many things, I've never understood the argument here. It just does not make sense. Earlier this year, the FTC also uses outside litigator Beth Wilkinson, who seemed a clear statement of its intention to sue.
And since then, I tried to find something. And from the sound of things, usually showing anything. Therefore, if you are really Liebowitz and made a big bet on Google hunting, what do you do? One strategy would be to lose a lot of stories about how the FTC is all set to sue Google ... then tell Google that the best "fix".

Dish gives up effort to turn Blockbuster into a Netflix competitor

It's been a bumpy road for the Blockbuster brand especially in recent years, and things are a little more difficult. In an interview with

Bloomberg

, founder and CEO Charlie Ergen of Dish Network has confirmed that the company abandons its current efforts to challenge Netflix Blockbuster, saying he did longer intends to use the mark as video streaming or DVD by mail service in the United States. Ergen said Dish himself had other plans for Blockbuster, but did not specify what they are. It also seems quite resigned to anything, saying that "the worst case, we will take our money after losing a bit of time, money is not much, and life goes on."

Peter Molyneux on Curiosity: "This is the most amazing experience I've ever had"

experienced designers talk with us about the game cube that has all your typing on touch screens in search of a hidden "life changing" reward

course, this could be a brilliant self-referential joke. Peter Molyneux, the famous game designer for the most promising projects, with the promise of a price change life at the center of its latest version. But curiosity has become a phenomenon. What people think they are.

curiosity uninitiated, this is a game designed and built by Smart Molyenux in their new study, 22Cans. This is a massively multiplayer experience, which is a cube floating in virtual space. The cube is built from more than 60 billion "bucket permits", which can be exploited by remote players. Idea is that players continue to play away, removing the tiles to complete a layer, then the layer Next available. And then the other. And so on until one of the participants and taps Roves the last piece, at which point you will unlock a video explaining its price. Molyneux Only and other staff know what it is.

Launched Tuesday, as hundreds of thousands of people attended, by typing in the cube last layer. Some are motivated by the desire to see the price, but most just seem to enjoy recording, removing tile and take pictures in the process. Some are words, there seems to have been a curious marriage proposal. It is a kind of collective work of art and a meditation on the constraint. It is a strange cross between multiplayer games online magnetic letters and social critic Ian Bogost game Cow Clicker. It is, like everything he does Molyneux, interesting and divisive.

To learn more about curiosity and its origins, we talk about Molyneux, who spoke to us after 36 hours without sleep and six cups of coffee.

So obvious the beginning, where did the idea?
over the years, you only have to choose the inspiration and ideas bubble in my mind. I remembered long ago, Kit Williams hid a golden hare somewhere in England and wrote a book that was made with advice on where he was. It really sparked my imagination, I read the book and it was too cryptic for me to understand, but it seems that people fascinated - even had news. This thing was only worth five thousand dollars, but the mystery of where it was really struck a chord with the public.

And then I saw a TED talk given by JJ Abrams, who came on stage with a cardboard box that had a question mark drawn on the face. He explained that when he was a child, his father had given him a locked box and told me that there was something in him. But Abrams has decided not to reopen because he loved the mystery. All this combined with another thought: here we are in a world where almost overnight a billion people have smartphones in their hands, and not an experience that unites them in a unique way. I put all those together and that's how it was born of curiosity. We also wanted to test some theories of motivation I had, we wanted to see the analysis, we anted to understand peoples playing styles and born of something that I thought would be a good thing for a single person to have? What would you change in your life?

seem to be two reasons: it is the desire to find the price, but there is something about the cube tidy. It is a vicious loop constraint, right?

This is quite true. It is fascinating to see how the changes. It was not until Wednesday afternoon when the first layer is cleared, then we turn to a blank slate again, but the board is a little closer to the center - the motivations of people full-time cooperation will begin to change as closer to the center. And a blank slate, people can start drawing. At first, a person puts the word love and immediately someone else wrote "fuck". Then someone tried to change the word - is completely self-monitoring and happens every 24 hours and the number of people in the bucket.

is amazing and will most surprising, we were completely and totally overwhelmed by the number of people trying to get into the bucket. I thought it would be an enjoyable experience that some people are interested, I thought the first week we would have a couple thousand people - that he had in the first ten minutes. Now we have hundreds of thousands of people around the world, playing at the same time. All our servers are really cracking at the seams - we simply update and publish a solution so that you can see people who play in real time on your side.

had some problems with the server, it must have been a technical challenge to keep this up.

Well, we have the problem that, because we are a small developer, the servers that hold the hub of Amazon are very, very expensive. We must ensure that we are not bankrupt by our own success. None of us slept in the past 36 hours, just to keep things. Providing I can keep coffee intravenously injected into the veins of the people who should have a solution soon.

After years of Triple A large projects, creativity seems to have been liberating for you.

You know what? This is the most incredible experience I've ever had. I made something like 15 games and some of them were great experiences, but the last 24 hours has been amazing. I mean, I had to take a corner to cry a few times. It's just an amazing feeling to something so pure and simple there and see the world and the interpretation of the definition of the latter. And the fact is, if I can learn for the big game we are working on, which will make the game much more likely to succeed and what I want it to be.

the impression that all game developers that we have these games for decades Triple A, we need to go back to school, we need to consider children who do not know much . These smart phones are so different - the people who use them are different people than you have tried before, and that means we have to learn new rules and make completely new gaming experience. Curiosity does not show that there are new things to do, there are so many new things that we can give people in these devices have never seen before. The power to do what you are here today - we must be courageous in the way we approach it. And you have not seen the surprise that comes from knowing why we want to put a link to their Facebook profile, you can be curious about it. At the moment we do not show anything. The first idea was to make it as pure as possible, but the layers are revealed we'll have event surprises.

And surely think, ahem, monetization?

There are two sides to this question. The first thought is, there may come a time during the execution of curiosity becomes prohibitive - we are just a small start and a limited amount of money to spend. We are independent at the time, which means that we eat our own money - it's nothing to worry about, but we must be aware of this.

The second thing is, in the context of the experiment, we can activate monetistaion, but I do not want to do at the wrong time, I want to when you can learn something it. We will not do it just to make money - but it is very nice, there is nothing wrong with that, we'll do when we are willing to learn about it. One of the really interesting things that we pushed to next week, when they begin to show the world some of the analyzes, some of the things we learned from the hub, sharing the data we have. And it is amazing how many interesting behaviors ... is fascinating about what people do with their currencies. Some are hoarding, some people go. There are many interesting facts. When you've done that, it might be time to think of a monetsiation.

Grant said Metro "had not seen a wave" Impact of Time Out London, freedom, and the launch of Virgin Media Wi-Fi in London Underground made no difference in the number Metro readers.

Kenny Campbell, editor of Metro, said that as a solid, profitable printing is imperative to ensure that the title does not miss the shift to digital consumption.

"Trying to stop this movement would be like trying to build a dam and stop the tide out," he said. "It is impossible. We do not need a dam on the subway, we need a boat. 'S Not on managing decline in the subway, is a company that we have a lot of potential growth. " Kenny told Metro, which employs over 80 members of the editorial team, is another advantage of record sales and year - even if the impact of the London Olympics were shattered - and its parent company has agreed to title.

Metro
re-signed his lucrative contract to distribute newspapers on the London Underground in 2010.

The agreement covers seven and a half and covers the free distribution of 250 stations and 14 bus stations in London.

As confirmed by some of our own staff, all Google services in China has stopped working at least for most of the day, despite the research firm to ensure that everything was in good working condition. The authorities have not confirmed that everything was in place, but it is easy to raise the specter of censorship possible given the local political maneuver. Once every decade Communist Party congress began on Thursday, and the institution may have wanted to cut a line relatively unfiltered communication dissidents during a transition of power. Video About Fair Use, Remix & Culture Taken Down Over Copyright Claim (Of Course)

Few years ago we had a video message emphasizing absolutely fantastic by Julian Sanchez on the value of remix culture. The video is a key point that is often lost in these debates: the remix culture is often more about culture the remix, but the copyright author makes it difficult. She focused on a remix viral video that had a song group called Phoenix "Lisztomania", but only the video clips of people dancing in several films of John Hughes (mainly the classic scene in "The Breakfast Club"). It was pretty interesting, but what is even more interesting is how many others followed after

recreated
video in its own image. Then, the groups met in different places natty (Brooklyn, San Francisco) and created their own videos recreate the dance moves of their own to go along with the new song. It was really interesting and showed how important and remixing fair use is culture, and how they could take something and do more with it.

Fast forward to today, and even though this video has been for years, Julien has found his original video was removed at a copyright. If you go now, you see this:

For what it's worth, it does not seem to be intended only for Sanchez. Looking around, it looks like a group dance videos "original" pack Lisztomania Hughes kid videos are all with the same message. From there, it seems that the publishing house, rather than the band or its label. Kobalt claimed to be a new type of publication, but it seems awfully old-school approach, killing a popular viral video - and twice with the video that Sanchez is almost certainly qualifies as fair use. It was not quite commercial uses only part of the song, including meaningful comments, does not limit the market for the song and was clearly not a replacement.

And yet, he disappeared. Worse, when Sanchez appealed the demolition, which was rejected, and there seems to be nothing Sanchez can do:

Note that this screen is not Kobalt, but Glassnote and SMEs (which I think is Sony Music). Glassnote is an independent label that released the song, but in partnership with Sony, which is responsible for the distribution.
is also strange that there seems to be no further appeal process. After all, YouTube last month said it had changed its appeals process to avoid such situations. The "old" model has the objective is to "reject" the call and there was no further action possible. The "new" situation that is supposed to require the applicant to file a DMCA notice, when the DMCA process takes over.
users have always had the ability to identify the allegations concerning the value of the differences in their videos if they believe that these claims are not valid. Before today, when a content owner rejected this difference, you had no other resource requests for certain types of content identification (eg, requests monetize). Based on feedback from the community, we are presenting today is an appeal process that allows eligible users a new choice when it comes to a dispute rejected. When the user initiates a call, a content owner has two options: start a claim or file a formal complaint DMCA notice.

seems Kobo Arc (model K107) of the FCC came just in time for its launch in November. Not much you get from the presentation, but judging by our past practice, the arc should not be ignored. The 7-inch ICS tablet comes with a 1.5 GHz processor TI OMAP 4470 to the table, and the battery life 10-12 hours valued at 1280 x 800 pixels resolution IPS, a 1.3 megapixel front camera (sorry, no objective at the rear) and a custom user interface that the company expects to raise over shelf space more crowded. Deutsche Telekom and MetroPCS agree on $1.5 billion T-Mobile merger

Apparently, the "important issues" that were on the way to the future of T-Mobile and MetroPCS could not have been too expensive. Just a day after acknowledging that negotiations were underway both boards have approved the transaction under

Wall Street Journal

. The details of the agreement have not been officially announced yet, but

Financial Times Deutschland

reported that the two companies will be combined into a single unit in which Deutsche Telekom will 74 percent of the shares. MetroPCS will hold a 26 percent interest in the company and receive a check for $ 1.5 billion to their problems. It is hoped that this will put a stop to a recent agreement struck Crown Castle T-Mobile for the rental of mobile towers for $ 2.4 billion. The new airline maintain the largest brand T-Mobile with new CEO John Legere at the top, however, it seems that the transaction is structured as a reverse merger. This means that MetroPCS is essentially supported and vice versa and not T-Mobile.
Despite their combined subscriber base, the new T-Mobile Sprint will remain in the battle for AT & T and Verizon scraps. Eventually, however, Deutsche Telekom will be graceful exit from the U.S. market as its been so desperately searching for some time. This merger with a much smaller competitor is unlikely to raise the ire of regulators and allow the German company to reduce its participation and investment in a slow and controlled through the sale of shares. We are still waiting for the official announcements of both companies and will be updated statements roll in. source Filed under: cell phones, wireless, mobile, T-Mobile
