James Bond: why 007 games have almost never worked

rip-roaring adventures, memorable villains and beautiful women, James Bond must make great games. But I did the latter. Here's why

remember my first experience of a video game James Bond. It was the Commodore 64 View to a Kill, published by Domark Software in 1985. I vividly remember driving a taxi representation bit awkwardly shaped block around Paris looked like a series of random green stripes slapped one another. And I said, it does not reflect the experience of watching a James Bond movie. It would be a prescient observation.

Fast forward to 2012, and the last Bond film is thrilling moviegoers with his courageous action, the plot complex and compelling central performance. But there is not a video game tie-in directly. Instead, there are a couple of sequences Skyfall stuck in a game called 007 Legends, a better Bond collection, published last week by Activision and bits from the likes of Moonraker, Licence to Kill and Die Another Day . It is a shooter good first step, but critics are more or less unanimous in stating that ... does not reflect the experience of watching a James Bond movie.

And indeed, many publishers and developers have been valiantly not to enter the experience of watching a James Bond for 27 years. Electronic Arts has had a couple of decent go with your PlayStation 2 shooter 007: Agent Under Fire and 007: Everything or Nothing, but he lost (or rather) a license to Activision. After that, we have a Quantum of Solace game, a title that at least equaled his inspiration for the film clearly mediocrity, and then came a follow-up, Blood Stone 007, with a history of Bond screenwriter Bruce Feirstein, who had some courageous fighter but inexplicably, Joss Stone in the lead role. This is not a bug, it's Joss Stone.

What was the problem? Why have completely failed to give the game an experience that resembles the practice, or at least the most promising of our memories, to see James Bond movies?

Well, no response charitable and this is the best game ever made Bond Goldeneye. N64 Launched in 1997, this brilliantly designed shooter with multiplayer missions ingenious and excellent, was the product of a UK developer, Rare, at the height of his extraordinary abilities. GoldenEye is never a mediocre James Bond movie, but in the hands of designers such as Martin Hollis and David Doak, working on a study that was recently created headlines like Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct, has become a classic video games.

And it was perhaps the only time a leading developer absolutely on top of his game has received a title of James Bond to produce. Of course, that EA Redwood Shores Agent Under Fire All or Nothing developed and became Visceral Games and Dead Space titles scary, but 007 treated early in life. At the other end of the scale, Bizarre Creations, once one of the studio's brightest and most talented UK Blood Stone handled at the end of its useful life, probably tired and disillusioned by failure Driving game, Blur. Quantum of Solace, meanwhile, was made by Treyarch, just after his call not very good translation Spider-Man 3 before and practicable of Duty: World At War. Uncomfortable Bonds Bedfellows.

But I'm not sure what explains things completely. Instead, I think there was a big misunderstanding about how James Bond films really work. Most tie-ins have focused on the nature of the globetrotter scripts, theorizing that this sense of variety captures the essence of the experience of the Bonds. What we have done so often, games are crashing uncomfortably between playing styles, rapidly changing pieces together to meet the challenges of driving penalties, all in an attack breathless exotic locations . And on paper, this is the kind of thing you need to do - the James Bond films are about to call for action, adventure and constant forward

James Bond films are unlike many action films absolutely inseparable from the act of seeing the main character. James Bond films are romances between Bond and the public. Games have problems because they explore the central error of thinking that all we want

Bond. Some people do, perhaps, but most just want to see it. And even if you want it, the things we do not want these games can adequately reflect or reproduce. You can not press X to be charming and polite, you can not beat the O button to send a glass of Château Margaux 1985, thanks to a Monte Carlo casino in a beautiful heiress. Well, you could, but it is unlikely to be a tie-in Treyarch.

Perhaps the answer for the future that awaits us in the world of Bond very different points of view. For example, Sony has commissioned an adventure intelligent text to coincide with the release of Skyfall. Designed by British studio Hide & Seek gets players to imagine that the M16 operators conduct a formal review of the British Secret Service, and five missions involve communication with a chatbot. It is totally different from all the flashy polygonal blasters we've seen on consoles, but it allows us to explore the "universe" of Bond in a non-confrontational.

"I think a lot of Bond tie-ins have suffered the fate of many films licenses - ie they rushed out of the movie, instead of being lovingly created from scratch, "says Hide & Seek director Alex Fleetwood." Our games benefit greatly literacy huge players have with the world of Bond - the limits of a text adventure leaves much to the imagination of the player to run is interesting, is it not, that the link to the
world is underutilized in terms of games, especially when compared to Star Wars. felt like there are plenty of opportunities out there if the license grant may be solved ... "

Philip Morris Sends Cease & Desist To Artist For Using Marlboro Box In His Art

Whenever you think that lawyers may have finally caught on to the fact that sending cease and desist letters to silence the ridiculous things they do not like to go against them, we hear another case this happens. iPad Mini Announcement Helps Amazon Sell A Record Number of Kindle Fire HD's

Kindle Fire HD

The Apple iPad Mini fanboy announcement sent into a frenzy of mouth foaming, however, almost everyone has had a little problem with the new companies coming tablet level. Without too fine a point on it, the price of 329 million from Apple is so proud of is not really competitive because the hardware, especially due to economies of scale the company has. Apple knew that probably was not going after the tablet market $ 199, but the delta between the $ 130 Kindle Fire and iPad HD Mini seems to have contributed

iPad mini v Kindle Fire v Nexus 7: the Christmas fight approaches

"mini" Three tablets will be in the race for interested buyers - but the strategies of its leaders are very different

So the big reveal happened, and now the Christmas period, where everyone will talk about the different mini-tablets on offer - mainly family Amazon Kindle Fire, Google Nexus 7 and a mini iPad .

Here is a easy prediction: the mini iPad will sell much more than either of the others. In fact, it could sell more of them together. The reason is simple: to be sold in many countries more than one of the other two. Apple plans to sell the iPad mini from November 2

Thanks to the Apple Store (www.apple.com), Apple Stores and some Apple Authorized Resellers in the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

count em '- that is 34 countries. However, the range of Amazon Kindle Fire goes on sale in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France and Spain - which is six countries (although, of course, the States States at least 250 million potential buyers, and five European countries millions of buyers too).

Meanwhile, the Google Nexus One 7 - should soon get a shot of 32GB storage, and maybe even a 3G version - has been sold since July in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, and from August in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

country perhaps more will be announced at the event on Monday. There are eight countries - and while they are also very large, covering hundreds of millions of potential buyers, which is not a patch on 34 countries. Therefore assume that the mini iPad will sell millions and millions this quarter.

The more interesting question is what happens in countries where all three head to head. And while Apple is trying to do what he did with the iPod market - conquer the top, then lower the price space and size to scan what remains - it is very different dynamic happens this time . Look specifications, and some things that jump

. Mini iPad has a bigger screen than all but the Kindle Fire HD (which will probably after the "iPad standard" market)

. Mini iPad weighs less than any other, although the larger screen

. Costs iPad Mini

much

more than others.

How

than last year? Because Google and Amazon are both selling their products at below cost or - in the case of Amazon, and you want to return to profit by selling them to the press, and in order to Google because he wants to stimulate the market for Android tablets in what seemed a niche in the market (one who had attacked Amazon 2011 Kindle Fire output in the United States).

This is not exactly as January 2004, when Apple released the iPod mini - a physically smaller device that was his first step into the growing market for smaller capacity, had already left alone, while increasing capacity in the "full-size" iPod.

At that time, even if it was (even) more expensive than some of its rivals - iPod mini 4 GB will cost $ 249 (about £ 155) - was competitively priced with other like the Nitrus Rio launched in the same month.

now that has changed, because Amazon and Google are ready to eat the losses on the equipment if they can do until the software - or even, in the case of Google, just take a little market share, while people use the Web.

sales estimates tablets first generation Kindle Fire vary between 5m and 7m. Amazon will probably want to sell more this time, Horace Dediu Asymco but points out, "the Amazon Kindle will sell as many as they do, but the number is not going to be the best that I could do. "

Amazon

not

not convinced? Listen to Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO, the company announced new quarterly figures: "Our approach is to work hard to pay less for Sale devices close to equilibrium and can pack a lot of sophisticated equipment at a very low price ... and our approach to "re working -. $ 199 Kindle Fire is the best selling HD products worldwide through Amazon No1

"Incredibly, this is true even measured by unit sales. Both top sellers around the world are our Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite our $ 69. We sell more of each of these devices Top sellers the No4, book three of the fifty shades of gray series. "

not tell if it's selling book Fifty Shades three in the United States or worldwide, or if it is for the Kindle version, or both imprecision paperback version (maddening is one of the hallmarks Bezos in his public statements), and as editor of the James knows how many books are sold on Amazon (although probably in the tens of thousands of people per week) we still wondering a bit. But the goal Bezos is clear: sell at a loss of sales include content

Is this a good strategy? Consider that Amazon has announced a net loss of $ 274 million for the quarter and expects that in the next quarter to do anywhere from a net loss of $ 490 million to a net income of $ 310 million. This is the biggest difference I've seen such a provision, even if you allow $ 290 million of stock-based compensation to pay, saying that Amazon will do anything for a loss of 200 $ and $ 310 m profit. Half a billion in one way or another.
So Kindle Fire is great news for customers, who get a cheap device, but the Amazon shareholders may be wondering a little. (Another thing to consider:? If you buy a Kindle Fire content you submit to Amazon user variable price is higher than a visitor for the first time on Amazon)

HP takes Open webOS 10 live, shows it supersized on a TouchSmart video

WebOS loyalists waited a long, long time to launch HP webOS open in September, but the company has fulfilled its promise not a moment to lose. Open webOS 1.0 is now available with the basic browser and email applications, Enyo 2.0 Framework and hooks enough to allow the migration of a platform of choice. To prove this point, HP has been to move the software to another TouchSmart all-in-one - one device slightly larger than 4G Veer. Lest any point and have visions of developing a customized version for the TouchPad, however, would do well to remember the rule waiver HP compatibility with existing systems, and the word of the holes that exist in the current version of webOS Open it. Society needs time to offer open source media support, Bluetooth stack, advanced management network to faster versions and newer both Qt and WebKit. However, the curious can test the OS in an emulator today and intrepid developers can start building their own projects with the code and tools found in the source link.

What Jobs said about 7in tablets in 2010

Two years ago, the CEO of Apple, then, told financial analysts why the "avalanche" of tablets 7in would fail. Watch now how your reasons?

So if Apple really launch a 7.85in "mini iPad", how does it fit with what Steve Jobs said two years ago? You will recall that on 18 October 2010, Jobs appeared in the discussion of the results of the benefits of Apple to put in their two billion in value.

Apple

then had a good quarter, with sales of the new iPhone 4 went well (a record, with sales up 94% year on phone a year to 14.1 million, and sales of the iPad had also started gaining ground -. since zero when the iPad was released in April 2010, just six months earlier, to $ 4.2 million for the three months to September

But at IFA, Samsung showed a 7-inch tablet - and others have begun to enter the tablet market, focusing on 7-inch devices in part because it was cheaper screens

So what Jobs said? After taking a Potshot RIM ("We have now passed RIM, and I do not seem to catch up in the foreseeable future") and the lack of turnover for Android phones - estimated by analysts at 20 million quarter, while Nokia Symbian is more important in 29m ("Unfortunately, there are no reliable data on the number of Android phones are shipped each quarter hope that manufacturers will soon start reporting the number of Android phones shipped each quarter. "- a hope that has not yet been completed).

Microsoft had just released Windows Phone, there was no reason to argue that as a competitor.

And now we come to the tablets. Transcript courtesy of Seeking Alpha

I want to comment on the avalanche of tablets poised to enter the market in the coming months. Firstly, it seems to be only a handful of credible competitors, not exactly an avalanche. Second, almost all of them use seven-inch screens, cons about iPad screen of 10 inches. Start there. One naturally thinks that a seven-inch screen would offer 70% of the benefits of a 10-inch screen. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. The screen measures are diagonal, so that a seven-inch screen is 45% the size of 10 inches, the screen of the iPad. You heard me right,. Only 45% of the size

If you take an iPad and hold it upright in portrait view and draw an imaginary horizontal line mid-bottom of the screen, displays seven-inch tablets are a bit smaller than the bottom half screen of the iPad. This size is not sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion.

So, how do you respond to that, Mr. Jobs?

Well, one could increase the resolution of the screen to compensate for some of the difference. This makes no sense, unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers about a quarter of the present size. Apple has done extensive user testing on touch interfaces over many years, and really understand these things. There are clear limits to how much you can physically place elements on a touch screen so that users are not able to exploit, tap or pinch. This is one of the main reasons we believe that the screen size of 10 inches is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps.

Third, every tablet user is also a smartphone user. No tablet can compete with the mobility of a smartphone, its ease of installation in your pocket or bag, resigned to intervene when used in a crowd. Given that all tablet users will already have a smartphone in your pocket, leaving precious display area to fit a tablet in your pocket is clearly the wrong choice. The seven-inch tablets are tweeners, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad.

Let
Note that 7-inch tablets "tweeners." You would think that if the "mini iPad" is the kind of size, then Apple executives have practiced your answers ", but Steve Jobs said that the tablets of this size were tweeners" for the event on Tuesday.

Oh, and back to Steve Jobs October 2010

applications
point remains true, of course, but the question must now be: if the tablet 7in (or 7.85in because Apple is expected to unveil - but not too true) are "tweeners" how applications written for the 9.7in iPad look?

A little math: if the iPad has a smaller screen 7.85in, and the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the current iPad, then you will have a screen area in 29.6sq, compared to 45, the iPad 2 places today - so that would be the new two-thirds of the area (or the oldest is 50% larger, but depends on what is used as the denominator)

However, the Google Nexus 7 has a 7-inch screen, its proportions - 16:10 - means that the actual area of ??the screen is 22m-inch Amazon Kindle Fire, which also has a 7 inches diagonally, it is even more strange proportions - 17:10 - which means that your area is 21.4sq in.

This means that the "mini iPad" would be, if these measures are the same, they have a display area of ??a major third higher than the one of two devices (or their screens would 25% smaller Again, choose the denominator).

Q3, 2012 Report: XSS Named the Most Common Attack Type in Europe and US

iPad Mini and Surface launch: the tablet wars heat up

tonight launch Mini iPad will be quickly followed by lavish event for Microsoft Surface Thursday tablet

is the story of two touch screens this week, Microsoft and Apple head to head the launch of its latest tablet devices. Microsoft has released the stops to convince the world that the surface is small tablet to beat, with a safe free event in New York Thursday. Apple, a company notoriously secret, prefer a public relations strategy that would at least surprising failure by any other organization imaginable. Dedicated rumor sites buzzing with speculation for months in advance, the evangelists themselves Apple promoting soap into a frenzy of excitement.

is a lively tablet market with the best selling Amazon Kindle Fire and 7 Nexus runs on Google's Android software. Apple has realized this potential and, given its competitiveness toxic, Google will delete the small tablet market. Microsoft needs a minor miracle to reverse their fortunes.

Surface

is a product with great touches of fat cover becomes a keyboard and magnetic, minimal, apple-like. There is a camera and an emphasis on desktop software, indicating that Microsoft is releasing this as more of a toy executive, but there is no 3G connection so that buyers do not have to worry about a additional contract. The real fun is Metro interface navigation impressive so designed that it feels like a breath of fresh air pixelated composed typography and navigation tart squares of bright colors. Pre-orders for the amounts sold in the United States during the weekend, it seems that the tribe moved.

Microsoft launched its first tablet in November 2002 - nearly eight years before the iPad - but the years following rotation-selected, tapping the pen tips are not exactly JK Rowling year Microsoft. The incarnation as a coffee table touch did not speak to the mobile trend, either. Late Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not hesitate to hold the knife in the Microsoft awkward beast in a jubilant side at the launch of the iPad 2 in 2011, Jobs said that Apple had sold 15 million iPad in the last nine months of 2010 - "more than any tablet PC ever sold."

Surface
look back exactly two years, Steve Jobs seemed to exclude small tablets "Tablets. Tweeners are seven inches, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad" Read Now sounds more like the code Jobsian intelligent, arguing for a new product that does not compete with the iPhone or iPad.

Dan Crow, former head of Apple engineering and project manager at Google, think this is a sign of maturity that Apple pushes more specialized sectors of the market. Microsoft is a product diversification largest touch screen that consumers have not warmed up. "Touch screens have been tested on their desks for years, but when the screen is oriented vertically las hands touch ... I see that supports traditional desktop computers, but the proportion of tablets and smartphones will continue to grow, and tablets are eating into the notebook market. "

Apple Where do we go from here? Crow believes the company has reached its maximum, and that the new mapping tool is bug-ridden it was a mistake that would have been impossible in employment. "This is indicative of the type of errors that Steve was very good at stopping. They accumulate over time and erode people's confidence in the company. Think I may have seen the Apple peak. We are beyond the age of gold. "
Two days after the release of the iPad Mini, and quite possibly a new MacBook, the fourth quarter results will be sent to Apple. After a sad week for equities Intel, Microsoft and Google, investors will turn to Apple to raise the spirits and funding in the area of ??technology. Last quarter, Apple admitted rumors disrupt product sales, but this quarter is expected to see the launch of the iPhone 5. The next quarter will be the largest, covering Christmas and see that the iPhone 5 Deluge roll in. It is worth recalling that the talent of Steve Jobs was not to predict the future. It was in creating good products, then - largest supplier - convince everyone that this was the future. Microsoft had better hope that their banter worked well.
