Philip Morris Sends Cease & Desist To Artist For Using Marlboro Box In His Art

Whenever you think that lawyers may have finally caught on to the fact that sending cease and desist letters to silence the ridiculous things they do not like to go against them, we hear another case this happens. This time is snuff giant Philip Morris, which has sent a notice to Brad Troemel artist for a work of art that was in her Etsy page. I had two different rooms for sale on Etsy, each with a box of Marlboro. One of them is active. According to counsel for Philip Morris Engineering, consumers who see it will be confused into believing that Philip Morris is really supporting the product. Because, apparently, Philip Morris believes that consumers are complete idiots who do not understand the art-as-social-commentary.



It reminds me of the Louis Vuitton brand as intimidation to close major exhibitions of their products. Trademarks of intimidation to silence critics is not new, but it is pretty ridiculous. The end result, of course, is that the work Troemel - and comments on the original products - many today will
