Reddit, Trolling, Doxxing, Free Speech & Anonymity: Whoo Boy, Is This Stuff Complicated

In case you have not followed much controversy last week on Reddit, a number of discussions on a variety of subjects, freedom of expression, trolling, anonymity and more. The short version is: there has been some concern (quite reasonable and understandable) on the subreddit / r / CreepShots people (almost all of which are likely to be men) were taken surreptitiously post pictures of other people, usually women, often focused on issues of sexual objectification vaccine. The subreddit was part of a number of similarly disturbing subreddits that focus on objectifying women - often very young women. Reddit tends to perform manually the best approach to this kind of thing, which allows the community to do what the community. In extreme cases where the conditions of service have been violated (and laws have been broken) things later - but most of the time, allows police Reddit community. Some Redditors discovered that the best way to deal with information they do not like it with more information

and began to exhibit moderators CreepShots information, sometimes publicly the names (and get a teacher fired for publishing photos of their camera phones student - ick).

Jezebel published an article about moderators CreepShots tour, then came the news that Adrian Chen Gawker was created to expose one of the most famous moderators / trolls site, ViolentAcrez. Before fate, some moderators to one of the most popular subreddit, / r / Politics announced that they would prohibit links to all Gawker sites "until steps are taken to remedy the violation serious ethics and integrity. "Chen came to publish the story anyway - well written, detailed background history on the type, Brutsch Michael, who admits to being a pleasure" troll "in to obtain a reaction of people. During the weekend, Brutsch was fired from his job, apparently.

had many discussions about it - and the ethics of almost everyone involved. A person named Navneet Alang us directly involved, saying that if Facebook was "censored", an article, we want to be "furious" about it - but somehow because we are aligned with Reddit, it is not. The truth - as always - is much more complex. Firstly, let me be clear about a number of things: I think / r / CreepShots and several other similar subreddits are very disturbing and questionable ethics. I also believe that the decision to ban some stories Gawker has subreddits stupid and really cons-productive if the intention was to draw attention to the article. That said, the goal was to create cooling effects for other journalists. And, in this regard, I agree with Adrian Chen. I think he did a fantastic piece of communication (journalism today yay), and should not be punished for it. I tend to think it makes the mods decided to ban child to watch, not to say hypocritical, very open to charges of hypocrisy.

said, the situation is not so simple. It is'

not

well as the prohibition of Facebook Links - because it is the company that affect its users. Reddit, on the other hand, has always been

driven by its users

with mods that have significant power in each control subreddit. If you want to make a decision as a ban on all Gawker sites - no matter how

stupid
and counter
such decision may be - have the right to do so. Somehow, the "analogy Facebook" would be more appropriate if the person had said that everyone has the power to block links on your own wall
. Qu that is what they do - and nobody complains.
