Even In The Age Of Abundance It's Quality, Not Quantity, That Counts

Seth Godin's just prolific. In addition to publishing a series of popular books marketing with catchy titles like "All Marketers are Liars", "The big moo" and "Small is the new big," he wrote short messages, but all intelligent days, some of which are fairly obvious, but many of which contain gems of vision.

This fluidity with words which means it is able to comment on the age of abundance that we are entering by the rise of digital technologies. One of his latest pieces is entitled "How the long tail of content lame bonus / media" and appears as part of Project Domino, "a new way of thinking the publication founded by Seth Godin and powered by Amazon." - An association which is itself symptomatic of the digital age.

The message is in response to an interview in The Huffington Post with the President and CEO of Ingram Content Group, David "Skip" Prichard. Prichard is surprisingly optimistic and open to new ideas for someone who has a book distribution company - not an area known for its innovation.

But Godin emphasizes a particular aspect of the responses of Prichard, characterized by the following exchange:
Are there books available

improved this holiday season have already changed the definition of a book?

Yes, for example, a biography can only come to life in many ways. Jacqueline Kennedy: historical conversations about life with John F. Kennedy, all the audio interviews, videos, photographs, texts and transcripts available. Even the classics - Pride and Prejudice Penguin has been updated with clips from the film and even instructions on the ball. For the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit, HarperCollins has published an electronic version exclusive artwork, including JRR Tolkien's books and records recently discovered Tolkien. Publishers are now learning that adds value for readers want or unpaid. I hope we see a lot of experimentation in this area
Godin describes these "wonderful visions of the future", as "economic ridiculous" and said:.
The Long Tail
creates acres of choice, as the almost infinite number of possibilities. But at the same time, embrace (all formats) production values ??much lower. As Michael Jackson and Sony paid to make Thriller album, the artists of today can make and sell over 5000 songs. You can not justify spending millions of dollars to produce a record in the world of the long tail.

This is an important point that the copyright industries are extremely reluctant to recognize, because it disagrees with their business models based on only a few successful massive box office are very profitable. There are good reasons for your preference: the high costs involved in creating these works act as a barrier to entry for newcomers, and help preserve the status quo. The new model, around a large number of low-cost, available for anyone to take - including artists who sell directly to their audience.

As Godin says:
not some publishers put a couple of books for the masses. No, the market in the immediate future is a million publishers that publish the 100 million readers
He explains what it means for ebooks.
