Facebook, Roger Ebert And The Pointlessness Of The Jerk Patrol

Much has been said recently about the issue of "corporate censorship" after closing the Facebook page of Roger Ebert, probably because some people have complained about his comments (no Twitter, Facebook) about death that some were offended by. A lot of people jump on the "censorship" car, and some of them makes me wonder if we need a different word. When a private "censorship", which is very different from when a government "censors" and using the same word is often confusing.

But perhaps the most important point is how the private are now saying that great speech and what they are not allowed. It

, but leads to a certain arbitrariness, as demonstrated here with many people think Facebook has gone too far. The company then tried to pretend he was a "mistake", but not many people seem to think.


However I think it gets more interesting raises a separate issue. "Idiot Patrol" of the utter futility and arbitrariness of some people do not seem Ebert loved the comments. Fair enough, but a little "shocked" people say you should lose your account? This is what makes many people very angry. As it should. Yet, like everything that happens, there are all these efforts to try to criminalize being a "reflex" line. But as this little mess, what is and what is not "an idiot" or "offensive" is totally subjective, in most cases, and offend a person is not a reason to take action against the President. It's a shame that Facebook does not seem to recognize that, but even more frightening when governments pass laws without understanding that
