Insanity: Romney's Ad Featuring Obama Singing Al Green Shut Down Via Copyright Claim

YouTube videos of the campaign was arrested false claims with alarming regularity. And now as we enter the silly season of the U.S. presidential campaign, which means that we will see high-profile takedowns. Back during the 2008 campaign, the McCain campaign even sent a letter to YouTube seeking to explain the fair use of the company (seriously), and suggesting that presidential campaigns should receive special treatment in order to prevent videos being demolished. Of course, what could be better than the presidential candidates talked about how he had fix

the appearance of "shoot first, ask questions later "DMCA takedown procedures, but no one seems willing to do it again. In 2008 the first primary, Mitt Romney has also had to explain the fair use of Fox News, so you should be ready for this problem again.

In fact, there seems to be the first "fair use victim" this time. Romney campaign had posted a video ad on YouTube, which included some well-known images of President Obama to sing a single line of Al Green "Let's stay together". It seems that BMG triggered to issue a notice of withdrawal in Romney.

This confuses me. If you look at the images of the original song for Obama is a grand total of 9 seconds. If ever there was a clear case of fair use - a very short extract, which is used in political advertising - this would be her.
Hopefully Romney, who spoke against the SOPA during the primaries, will begin to realize that maybe I should take a stronger stand in favor digital rights and freedom of expression against the excesses of copyright, now that it's (still) a victim of such things. But maybe it's just an illusion Permalink |. Reviews | Send this article
