St. Louis' Washington University: Free Speech For All!* (*At The Sole Discretion Of School Administration)
For some reason, higher education institutes seem to be tempted to treat adults and children candid proactively grass covering their ears and eyes to something offensive rear its ugly head and right smack soundly in their armored fists sensitivities. Critical thinking is a skill that is to be grown during the years of the formation of the person, but thanks to a series of studies overprotective political speech (often apparently designed to prevent bullying) to start primary school and continues throughout the post-secondary education, many children are now adults, fully aware that the meshes of the world and the cloistered existence they have enjoyed for the last 12-16 years.
The other strange aspect of these policies speak restriction is that universities consider champions of liberal democracy (in the classical sense) education, broaden horizons and open mind while preparing today's youth for the future. These days, almost anything is "off" or "open". Instead, students are placed in a narrow path that has been polished to a high shine by idealism wrong.
FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) was followed by the First Amendment, speech that violates university policy for a decade. Many policies have been discussed too much, but few achieve the conflicting policies dissonance of Washington University in St. Louis are related to speech.
Washington University is a private university, which gives a bit more leeway in terms of restriction of freedom of expression. However, the university said that students can enjoy the freedom of expression while enrolled.
Introduction to the University student judicial code University (PDF) states explicitly:
freedom of thought and expression is essential to the academic mission of the University. Nothing in this Code shall be construed as limiting the free and open exchange of ideas and points of view, even if this change is to be offensive, rude, annoying or disparage certain. If Washington U. had stopped there, there would be no story. It is an admirable policy, guaranteeing students freedom of expression, something that many institutions are reluctant to do, because freedom of expression can often be "offensive, rude, annoying or humiliating. "
So what's the problem? Well, it is difficult to reconcile the" essential character "of freedom of thought and expression in other parts of Political Washington U. student manual guidelines Residence Life and WUSTL proceduresdefine "harassment":
... any behavior that is harmful or potentially harmful to the physical, emotional or psychological well-being determined at the sole discretion of the University
