Valve Fends off Hollywood, and Files Several Patents Hoping to Improve on Gamepad Design

Gabe Newell

Valve hopes to build a better controller.

Gabe Newell is a hard man to arrange an interview, so when the Nerdist Podcast managed to take an hour of your time, they got our attention. Unfortunately Half Life 3 was not on the agenda, but several issues steam box next to the company remained unanswered, including what you have in mind as an input device.

According to Newell several patents have been filed in the controller design, and are still working hard to find a format that they are happy with. Go with a single controller design is a curious choice of bold design, especially when you consider the amount of PC games is optimized for the Xbox 360. It was probably unrealistic to assume that Microsoft gamepad is attached to a small factor Linux PC form, but remains an interesting dilemma. A valve designed PC Gamepad support rally for game designers? Or simply dissident market and damage the long-term compatibility.

Nintendo showed the Wii U that innovation is always possible when it comes to input devices game, but developer support driver is at a record level in the PC and Xbox 360 Games for Windows controllers largely thanks. Since then, we find that most PC gamers do not choose a controller over a mouse and keyboard than nine times out of ten, but it still has a place for gaming platforms or individual player experiences lean back .
